OUR STORY
THREE FRIENDS, ONE DREAM
Nature teaches us that it takes patience to achieve desired results.
Caccianemici is fruit of genuine friendship, cultivated over time through respect and dedication. Ours is fulfillment of the shared intent of three friends, each with his own back story, who have got together to make their dream come true: to create a project in harmony with the land.
We believe that things are always better done than said, and for this reason, the guiding idea behind our project is based on a few practical principles.
First and foremost: observation.
The beauty of nature deserves to be observed and admired if its wondrous workings are to be understood.
Next comes understanding.
The soil, with its needs, its rhythms, its tansformations, must be understood and followed without ever changing its balance.
Finally, creation.
It’s through sweat and hard physical work that we transform the precious raw material the land offers us into our wines.
Caccianemici’s natural and biodynamic wines bear witness to this repeating cycle, a cycle that celebrates conviviality in its most genuine form.

THE STORY OF OUR LAND,THE CACCIANEMICI FAMILY
Theirs is a centuries-old story, one that develops, changes and is enriched year on year, just like a natural process.
Terre di Scopeto, once the setting for the vicissitudes of the Caccianemici family, is today the land from which we draw our life-blood, our native wines.
Though strong on tradition, we decided to introduce an innovative aspect to our project by producing experimental wines in Terre di Montechiaro.
The ability to look to the future and yet still maintain the flavour of tradition makes for authenticity – a characteristic to be savoured sip after sip.
TALES OF INTRIGUE IN MEDIEVAL BOLOGNA
ORIGINS
Tracks: bear prints. The bear is the symbol one of the two branches of the Caccianemici family, the family at the centre of numerous intrigues in Bologna over the years.
It is the year 1144 and Gherardo Caccianemici is elected Pope Lucius II after Pope Celestine’s death. His pontificate is not a great success, due to the Pierleoni uprising in Rome and the wishful territorial ambitions of the Normans led by Roger II of Sicily.
Although he is bold in facing his enemies single-handedly, his bravery alone is not enough, and he is killed by a rock thrown from an angry mob.
DANTE’S BOLOGNA
In the XVIII canto of Hell, Dante mentions Venedico Caccianemico among the pimps who caused a stir with a “filthy story,” when he sold his sister, Ghisolabella, to the Marquis of Ferrara in return for favours.
«O TU CHE CON L’OCCHIO A TERRA GETTE,
SE LE FAZION CHE PORTI SON FALSE,
VENEDICO SE’ TU CACCIANEMICO
MA CHE TI MENA A SI PUNGENTI SALSE?»
INFERNO, CANTO XVIII, VERSE 48-66
EPILOGUE
According to the centuries-old legend, in 1472, the widower of Isabella Malvezzi, Cesere Caccianemici, was killed by Antonio dal Lino. Fearing for his safety, dal Lino asked the protection of Giovanni Bentivoglio from the rival Bentivoglio family.
Despite Bentivoglio’s protection, dal Lino was soon killed by the Caccianemici family to avenge Cesere’s death.
According to legend and actual events, it seems that Isabella’s infidelity provoked Cesare into poisoning her and killing her lover. For this reason, it is suspected that it could well have been her father, Achille Malvezzi, who ordered his son-in-law’s murder to save his daughter’s honour.
These tales are embedded into the history of Bologna, the same way a bear leaves its tracks on soft ground. The same way Caccianemici wines leave an emotive impression on the palates of all those who savour them.
